At the age of 5, Brett began learning violin using the Suzuki method. By age 11, he had already done a two-week tour through Western Europe (this was before the fall of the Iron Curtain!). By his late teens, Brett took up the guitar and developed a deep interest in the Blues having discovered the likes of Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, via bands like Led Zeppelin, Savoy Brown and Hot Tuna. In 2006, he was chosen to be a part of an incredible project funded by Public Radio International (PRI), composing and recording the soundtrack for a radio documentary on the life and times of Zora Neale Hurston. The show aired countless times in 2007 and an educational CD was compiled for high school age children around the world, with over 25 million copies distributed! Brett is a uniquely talented Blues guitarist and classical violinist, loving life as a musician and music instructor in Tallahassee, Florida.
Local producer and sound engineer Dave Murphy has been responsible for the advancement of several notable musicians, including Eric Durrance, Pierce Pettis and a host of celebrated Tallahassee musicians. Dave will talk with Brien about his remarkable career and how Tallahassee’s music scene has continued to advance in spite of the lack of support from local community leaders.
